Children & Youth

Children and Youth are welcome in our office. Most of your children’s dental needs can be done in our office. Dr. Nielson is a general dentist, however having 4 children of his own, he is very comfortable treating all ages. We generally recommend children come for their first appointment around 2 years-old. These early appointments allow our youngest patients to feel comfortable and explore the office. Every visit ends with a visit to the “treasure chest”. Our ultimate goal is to create happy, positive kids that want to come back soon.

Do I Stay With My Child?

We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination. During future appointments, we suggest you allow your child to accompany our staff through the dental experience. We can usually establish a closer rapport with your child when you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child’s confidence and overcome apprehension. However, if you choose, you may come with your child to the treatment room. For the safety and privacy of all patients, other children who are not being treated should remain in the reception room with a supervising adult.

We are all highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety. Separation anxiety is not uncommon in children, so please try not to be concerned if your child exhibits some negative behavior. This is normal and will soon diminish. Studies and experience have shown that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own and in an environment designed for children.
